Paule Gauthier

The Honourable Paule Gauthier, P.C., O.C., O.Q., Q.C., Ad. E. died on September 20, 2016. She was the daughter of the late Mariette Marchand and the late Gaëtan Gauthier, and was the wife of Gilbert Cashman.

A lawyer in private practice specializing in corporate and administrative law as well as arbitration and mediation, the Honourable Paule Gauthier was a partner in the firm Stein Monast LLP, and she also served on the boards of directors of large Canadian public companies. She was the first woman to be elected President of the Canadian Bar Association in 1992. She was designated a member of the Queen’s Privy Council for Canada in 1984, Queen’s Counsel in 1988, an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1990, and an Officer of the National Order of Québec in 2001. In 2009 she received the distinction Advocatus Emeritus from the Québec Bar and in 2012 she was appointed a member of the Academy of the Grands Québécois. She was honorary Consul General for the Kingdom of Sweden in Québec from October 1994 to January 2016, and received the Kingdom of Sweden’s Order of the Polar Star in December 2001.

The Honourable Paule Gauthier chaired or sat on the boards of directors of a number of governmental, academic, cultural, charitable and social agencies in Québec and Canada. She was a member of the board of directors of the Fondation du Musée national des Beaux-Arts de Québec, the board of governors of the Fondation Québec Philanthrope, and the board of directors of the Royal 22nd Regiment.

Besides her husband, she is mourned by her brother-in-law, Robert Cashman, her sister-in-law, Jean Cashman (Ghislain Blondin), her cousins, Louise Amiot (Michel Bédard), Pierre Amiot (Michelle Doré), Jacques Amiot, Jean Amiot (Nour Sayem), Gilles Laroche (Odette Brosseau), Denis Laroche, André Laroche (Jeanine Bouchard), as well as by numerous friends and colleagues, especially Charles G. Gagnon.

The family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to the staff of Hôpital de l’Enfant-Jésus and its nursing aides for their support and their excellent care.

The funeral will take place on Friday, September 30, 2016 at 2:00 P.M. at Église St-Dominique, 175 Grande Allée Ouest, Québec City, QC, G1R 2H1. The family will receive condolences at the church before the funeral commencing at 12:30 P.M.
