William James Robertson
After a brave 28 years struggle with Lyme disease and Parkinson’s, William James Robertson died peacefully on January 16, 2019 at St. Brigid’s Home., Quebec.
William was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on November 28, 1941. He grew up in Whitehead Nova Scotia, Aylmer Quebec, and Ottawa, Ontario before settling in Québec where he lived for 50 years. He was predeceased by his parents, William “Robbie” and Edith (Turriff) Robertson, his parents-in-law, Daniel and Mary (Beal) Murphy and his former son-in-law, Henry Gauthier. He leaves to mourn his wife of 50 years, Mary Roscoe Murphy, his beloved daughters, Elizabeth Robertson, Deborah Robertson (Deven Chandra), his three cherished grandsons, Robert Gauthier, David Gauthier, and William Chandra, his brother, Wallace Robertson (Joanne Coleman), his sister, Ruth Robertson (Douglas Kelly), his brothers-in-law, Timothy Murphy (Lynne Murphy), and Thomas Murphy (Esther Murphy). He also leaves many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and cousins in Québec, Ontario, Manitoba, the United States and Great Britain along with friends all around the world.
William graduated in Aeronautical Engineering from Carleton University when he was only 20 years old, and proceeded on to graduate work there. He worked at the Patent Office in Ottawa, the High Altitude Research Project at McGill University, Computing Devices of Canada and finally at the Defence Research Establishment Valcartier, Quebec. He was an active member of St. Michael’s Church, Sillery where he was Rector’s Warden and a member of the choir. He was also part of the back-stage crew for many of the productions of the Québec Art Company and was involved in other community activities. William was an intellectual who was also an avid alpine skier, jogger and an enthusiastic football and hockey fan. Throughout their marriage, Mary and William spent many summer holidays in P.E.I. and in 1994 they built a summer residence on the Island. Once they retired, they divided their time between their treasured Québec and P.E.I. and developed wonderful ties to the Island and to their friends there.
Heartfelt thanks are extended to the personnel of the Jeffery-Hale-St. Brigid’s Day Centre and to everyone who works at St. Brigid’s Home, especially the devoted staff of the second floor. Special thanks go to Ann Marie, Christine, Alexandre, Céline, Robert, Jim Lambert, Johanne Doucette and Dr. Marie Martineau for their compassionate, attentive care of William. Great gratitude is sent to the family and friends who have unfailingly given their support throughout the years.
